Many people would call Robert Saunders' early life poverty-struck: one of three boys growing up on a tiny dairy farm in central Victoria in the 1940s and 50s. His father was dead from injuries received in the Middle East during World War II; his mum held the family together with little more than love and hope. At times, the boys went to school barefoot because there was no money for shoes.
